Electrical issue at Boulder City station
April 15, 2013
The pressurized ion chamber at the Boulder City station, which measures gamma radiation, is showing a slight change in its reporting pattern that is indicative of an equipment problem. The corresponding spike and drop is usually related to battery or other electrical issues. This pattern is recognized as an equipment problem due to the erratic nature of the pattern and to the drops in the minimum gamma radiation that reach levels well below normal for the area, which is not possible in our environment. We will be monitoring the pattern, and if it becomes worse a technician will revisit the station to correct the problem.
Pioche Communications Outage
March 6, 2013
Due to a recent configuration change associated with the Internet Service Provider at Pioche, a manual update of the communications software is required to re-establish communications. Expectations are that communications will be functional within the next few days. In the meantime, data is being collected normally and will populate to the web site as soon as communications are restored.
Work on electrical system causes fluctuations at Sarcobatus
March 5, 2013
Electrical rewiring activities at the Sarcobatus Flats station have caused some equipment to produce anomalous readings. Per CEMP policy, erratic readings that are caused by a known equipment-related issue will be edited out to avoid skewing station averages. -cmc
Pahrump & Indian Springs stations
February 22, 2013
The pressurized ion chambers at the Pahrump and Indian Springs stations, which measure gamma radiation, are showing a pattern that is indicative of an equipment problem. The corresponding spike and drop is usually related to battery or other electrical issues. This pattern is recognized as an equipment problem due to the erratic nature of the pattern and to the drops in the minimum gamma radiation that reach levels near or below 0, which is not possible in our environment. Plans are underway to better ground the electrical systems at Pahrump, Indian Springs, and other stations that periodically have this problem. -cmc

Delta Ion Chamber fluctuations
November 27, 2012
The pressurized ion chamber at Delta has been experiencing recent regular fluctuations in data output for its minimum and maximum measurements. Garden Valley station decommissioned
November 27, 2012
The Garden Valley CEMP station site has been decommissioned, and only data collected through a portion of October 17, 2012 (the time of its disconnection from the network) will be available from this point forward on the web site.
Public Notice of Rad Removal from Ranch Sites
September 25, 2012
Information on the removal of radiological monitoring equipment from CEMP ranch sites
The US Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing a gradual transition of the CEMP toward a vision of increased public outreach in participating communities. In order to accomplish this transition under the current challenging economic environment, DOE is discontinuing radiological air monitoring at the stations not located in communities effective September 25-26, 2012. This includes removal of the air samplers, pressurized ion chambers, and thermoluminescent dosimeters from the ranch stations at Stone Cabin, Twin Springs, Nyala, Garden Valley, and Medlin's Ranch. The several reasons for this decision are discussed below.
Firstly, two decades of air monitoring since the cessation of nuclear testing in 1992 indicate that widespread radiological monitoring of the airborne environment is no longer necessary. This point was highlighted by the recent detection by the CEMP of minute quantities of radionuclides associated with the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. The fact that the CEMP was able to detect such minute quantities of radionuclides from a source several thousand miles away, but has not detected radionuclides of concern in the airborne environment off the NNSS since testing ended in 1992 is significant, and indicates that radionuclides are not being displaced into the airborne environment from the NNSS in amounts that represent a threat to public health.
Secondly, an ample number of monitoring stations will remain in the communities to continue to confirm that detectable quantities of airborne radionuclides associated with past atomic testing at the NNSS are insignificant or absent. While radiological monitoring at some community stations may be discontinued over the next five years as well, stations that are located in communities that are well-positioned relative to prevailing weather patterns in proximity to the NNSS, that have high visibility and traffic, and significant community participation will be retained. Additionally, the on-site monitoring program continues with results reported in the annual site environmental report.
Finally, the DOE believes that these changes reflect responsible government with a good stewardship of tax dollars. Radiological monitoring at the ranch stations represents a greater comparative cost to the program than do the community-based stations, and the dollars saved from discontinuing air monitoring at these locations will be used to ensure continued public outreach and educational opportunities in the participating communities. A desire for an emphasis on educational outreach was a priority identified by public participants at the 2011 CEMP summer workshop. Additionally, there is interest in reallocating some of these resources toward a greater potential involvement of the CEMP in future aspects of water monitoring in areas down-gradient from the NNSS, since detection of underground-test related radionuclides in the groundwater off the NNSS is currently of public concern.
The DOE understands that many CEMP users find the weather data provided by the monitoring stations particularly useful, and DOE will be retaining the meteorological monitoring at the ranch site. Retention of the meteorological equipment makes it possible for other monitoring equipment to be installed or re-installed should the future mission of the NNSS change and DOE determine that additional monitoring is warranted. DRI will continue to maintain the public web site at cemp.dri.edu, which will provide access to archived radiological data for all stations, as well as near real-time meteorological readings for those stations from which radiological monitoring is discontinued.

New PIC at Delta
July 22, 2008
The pressurized ion chamber (PIC) at Delta was changed out for regular maintenance. The approximately 1 micro-R/hr increase in background gamma measurements is a result of the calibration sensitivity of the new instrument, and does not indicate an actual increase in background radiation.

Milford station around 11 A.M. which caused a 'spike' in the gamma radiation readings. This 'spike' will be removed by our QA process within the next few days.
Milford gamma readings
July 16, 2007
Recent gamma readings at the
Milford station are believed to have been caused by naturally-occurring radionuclides released as a result of wildfires burning in the Milford area during the past week and a half. Analysis of the gamma spectra of particulates on the air filter samples collected from the station for the periods July 2-9 and July 9-13 is currently being undertaken by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Report of Analysis: Milford and Delta, UT Air Filter Samples.DRI is also checking other possible explanations for the higher PIC readings, including whether the PIC was operating properly. The pressurized ion chamber (PIC) at the Milford station was replaced on the afternoon of Saturday, July 14 so that diagnostic tests could be run to ensure that the PIC installed during the fires was operating normally. The new PIC is currently reading approximately 3 micro-R/hr lower than the original PIC. This is within the normal range of variation between these instruments, and does not indicate an actual change in background gamma radiation at the site. A re-calibration of the way in which the station datalogger sees the voltage output from the PIC will occur shortly so that readings are comparable to historical data.
